INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUPERVISORS

List of all supervisors ( click to expand )

Dear POCUS supervisor

Competency in POCUS during early years of residency is an essential milestone for EM residents. Your expertise is highly needed to allow the residents to achieve this competency. We truly appreciate your time and effort put forward for this rotation.

Since most of you are quiet busy with your clinical and probably administrative schedule, residents will spend THREE SHIFTS only at each site. Only two residents will be posted per site to maximize the hands on practice. Currently we have 6 sites where POCUS instructors are available (SQUH, Alrustaq, AFH, ANH ,Ibra and Nizwa).

To standardize our teaching and residents expectations across various training site, please follow the following general guidelines:

1. Residents have already completed an online POCUS modules by the time they do the rotation (this is a prerequisite). So, focus should be on hands-on technique and how to optimize their image.

2. By the end of the rotation, residents should complete all the required scanning :

- FAST (50 scans)

- Lung (pneumothorax & Pleural Effusion) (10 scans)

- Basic ECHO (25 scans)

- Assessment for AAA (50 scans)

- DVT (25 scans)

- Gallbladder (25 scans)

- Renal (25 scans)

You need to directly supervise the residents for minimum of 8 hours during their week attachment with you. During remaining time, they will be scanning and saving the clips on their own. All these clips MUST be reviewed and feedback given to residents.

ONLY ADEQUATE CLIPS (Minimum image criteria fulfilled) CAN BE LOGGED AND SIGNED BY YOU IN THE LOGBOOK

An example of EDUS schedule at AFH,

* During individual scanning time, you are required to approach patients and take their permission (as well as their treating doctor permission) to scan. Save the scans (with minimum image requirement criteria) for review next day. Feedback will be given to you about adequacy of the scans, appropriate depth, gain , focus and interpretation of your findings.

3. Please ensure to fill at least one formative assessment per module during their attachment with you. The same form will be used as summative assessment during their practical exam.

4. Residents who showed deep interest, understanding of POCUS, completes the required scans and demonstrates competencies will be selected as potential instructor. I will ask for your nominations at the end of the rotation.

Outcome of the rotation :

Complete the required scans numbers &

Achieving competency in the 7 modules

Appreciate your hard work towards improving the EM residency Program.

Yours
